What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?

An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of conditions affecting the mouth, face and jaws. They are highly trained experts in both medicine and dentistry, and are specialists in the removal of teeth, impacted teeth, dental surgery, dental implants and jaw reconstruction, treatment of jaw fractures, diagnosis and management of pathology affecting the mouth and jaws, orthognathic (orthodontic) surgery and temporomandibular (jaw joint) disorders.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have obtained both dentistry and medical degrees, and completed general medical and surgical training as interns and then residents, before applying for selection into the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program. This speciality training takes a further four years. They are therefore medical and dental experts in the management of conditions of the face, jaws, mouth, and teeth.
